To refund capital credit assigned to eligible members of Golden Valley Electric Association whom we have been unable to locate.
Each year that Golden Valley Electric earns a margin (the amount left after expenses have been deducted from revenue), it is assigned to Co-op members in proportion to the amount they were billed for electricity during that year. These funds, called capital credits, are retained by the Co-op as a source of working capital for approximately 20 years and are refunded at the discretion of the Board.
Although there are some variations among the 1,000 electric co-ops nationwide in their handling of capital credits assignments and refunds, the approved procedures are fairly rigid. Methods of handling capital credits must meet the requirements of Rural Utilities Service, IRS, applicable state law and each co-op's bylaws and annual financial audit tests. GVEA's capital credits assignment and refund practices meet all applicable requirements.
The GVEA Board is currently reviewing our Capital Credits Policy to determine how capital credits should be refunded in the future.
If your name appears on the list, you must apply for your refund. There are many ways to apply for your capital credit refund:
Refund checks will be issued and mailed to you after your information has been researched and verified. Capital Credits have already been refunded for years 1959 through 1985 to all eligible current members of GVEA and to former members who have current addresses on file at GVEA.
